Once I had left, my hushed voice reappeared, and my throat hurt again. I knew in that second that God had healed my voice for just the right amount of time. All my worry was worthless because God always had a plan. I should’ve trusted Him when He placed me in finals without a voice. I should’ve known He would give me a strong voice to speak when He wanted me to speak.

I immediately opened the ballot folder, ready to see a 3-3 record because there was no way I had lost to more than three of those other debaters, or so I thought. But as I looked at those ballots I saw: loss, loss, loss, loss, loss. I had gone 1-5, the worst record of my entire NCFCA career. That record killed me. I sat down on the floor in that crowded hallway, moping over my pitiful record. I was so wrong.

It’s easy to get lost navigating through all the arguments made in your last rebuttal. But the moment you lose focus and ramble a couple of seconds too long explaining your response to a trivial argument, your time expires, and you miss an opportunity to address a very important argument that could lose you the round. Prioritization is key.
